A MAJOR COMING ATTRACTION NOT TO BE MISSED: THE 3rd ANNUAL BIG MAN’S BIRTHDAY BASH FOR CLARENCE CLEMONS AT BAR ANTICIPATION ON JANUARY 10, 2015 By Calvin Schwartz
Two years ago NJ Discover was hugely honored when we were asked to work the red carpet at the First Annual Big Man’s Birthday Bash for Clarence Clemons at the Wonder Bar. We interviewed the guests and celebrities and by the shank of the evening realized the commonality everyone shared; a powerful love and respect for Clarence and Nick. It probably sounds a bit trite but all night long you could feel this special energy bouncing around the Wonder Bar. You were excited to be there and absorb the molecular historic energy of the iconic Clarence. You felt something unique; glad to be alive and be part of it all.
Last year the response to the 2nd Annual Big Man’s Birthday Bash was so large and anticipated they moved it to Martel’s in Point Pleasant. Once again the music and energy was magic. It lasted for hours. No one wanted to leave. The town curfew was exceeded; testament to the amazing night.
And this year, as the event grows in scope, performers and celebrities and in reasons for our world here in central Jersey to be there, absorb and partake, the event moves to Bar A in Belmar and becomes basically an all day/night party of music, food, drink and friends. Therefore it really is not to be missed. And as always, by careful design, there’s yet another reason to be there; a perfect charity to support; Hometown Heroes which embodies the very fabric of our life here in central Jersey. See you on January 10th 2015.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE 3rd ANNUAL BIG MAN’S BIRTHDAY BASH FOR CLARENCE CLEMONS AT BAR ANTICIPATION ON JANUARY 10, 2015
Lake Como, NJ – On January 10, 2015, the Jersey Shore celebrates the birthday of
Hosted by actor, Vincent Pastore (“Big Pussy” from The Sopranos), featured acts include The Sensational Soul Cruisers, JoBonanno and the Godsons of Soul, Killer Joe and Lido Soul, The Eddie Testa Band, The Nick Clemons Band and many others. An All-Star line-up of Special Guest Artists that will join performing bands includes Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Gene Cornish (The Rascals), legends Bobby Bandiera (a regular member of Bon Jovi and a former Asbury Juke) and JT Bowen (the original frontman for Clemons’s Red Bank Rockers), “Mad Dog” Vini Lopez (Rock and Roll Hall of Famer as the original drummer for Springsteen’s E Street Band) and Lance Larson (original frontman for Lord Gunner). Also appearing will be Springsteen-fan favorite, “The Philly Elvis,” Nick Ferraro (who was most-favored by fans in the documentary, “Springsteen and I”) and actor, Artie Pasquale (whose credits include a regular role on The Sopranos). Many other guests are announced and more are expected to be added.
Nick Clemons a.k.a. Clarence Clemons III is the oldest son of Clemons and a co-producer of the event. He states, “My father always taught me to ‘Give back’ and remember the less fortunate. I try to do that and Hometown Heroes does great work for those in need.”
This is the third year that Clemons and his team have produced the Birthday Bash. Co-producer/Terry Camp is an attorney and long-time member of the Jersey Shore music community. He recalled, “When Clarence passed, Wonder Bar in Asbury Park hosted the Sensational Soul Cruisers and The Nick Clemons Band for a memorial show in July 2011. Bruce was kind enough to join us that epic night and we’ve been building on it since – selling out Wonder Bar in December 2012 and packing Martell’s in Point Pleasant last January. The show gets bigger and bigger every year.” He added, “We’re thrilled to be working with Tom Jannarone and his Bar Anticipation team. That place is cream of the crop for a diverse and quality entertainment experience.” The show will feature guest jams that are a long-time tradition on the Shore.

Going Gold for Natalie — UPCOMING CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS EVENT: Thursday September 4th at McLoone’s Pier House in Long Branch, NJ(0)
I met Natalie Grace at a recent Poker Run Fundraiser that her parents had arranged called Strength and Honor Fundraiser for Cancer Research for Kids at Bar Anticipation in Lake Como, (formerlySouth Belmar) N.J. Two years ago their beautiful daughter Natalie Grace Gorsegner was diagnosed with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Natalie Grace is expected to be finished with her chemo treatments in November of this year.
Every, SINGLE day approximately 46 families are told that their child has cancer in the United States alone and 7 of those children die every single day!
I had the honor of meeting this sweet little girl, who was wearing a very special Disney princess dress that day. By her side were her big sister, her mom and her dad. Her mother Andrea is one of the most passionate and motivated women I have ever met. She has transformed what could be a horrendously debilitating experience into a triumphant war against the absence of sufficient research to prevent and fight Childhood Cancer.
In addition, the day I spent at Bar Anticipation during the Strength and Honor Fundraiser gave me the privilege of meeting numerous NJ Motorcycle Bikers who traveled to support a cause they believed in.
It never ceases to inspire me how much goodness there is in this world. I asked Andrea to tell me about the people she has met through her journey these past 2 years. She shared with me some of the stories of how so many people have given a part of themselves, whether it be their time, their money, or simply their kindness.
Andrea and Dan Gorsegner moved to Middletown from Rutherford, N.J. in July of 2013, but they are no strangers to the area. Dan was born and raised in Middletown, where his parents Louise and John Gorsegner have lived for the past 50 years. Andrea was raised in Haddon Heights N.J., where her parents Linda and Bill Verdone still reside. As newlyweds Andrea and Dan moved to N.Y.C. for a few short years, before heading back to Rutherford, N.J. after Andrea gave birth to their oldest daughter Hannah. Soon they had another beautiful addition to their family, Natalie Grace. When Natalie was diagnosed with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia
on August 16, 2012 she was just shy of her 3rd birthday. Andrea immediately left her position as Photography Editor at Women’s Health magazine to care for Natalie, and soon after she and Dan thought it best that they sell their Rutherford home and move back to Middletown where they could be closer to family.
The N.J. community has been everything to Andrea and Dan. While they were living in Rutherford friends and strangers in the community stepped up to help the couple stay afloat with their bills when, at one point, they had been down an entire paycheck. Friends helped chauffeur Hannah to and from school, even prepared meals for the Gorsegner family when they needed them. Even in the Haddon Heights area, friends and neighbors alike found ways to help the Verdone family.
And when they moved to Middletown, Andrea and Dan were welcomed with the same kind of love. Only now the Gorsegner’s no longer needed fundraising for their own family, they had started their own fundraiser, Will You Send Us A Dollar, in an effort to raise much needed funds for childhood cancer research. In communities throughout N.J., and eventually throughout the entire country, people sent little Natalie their dollars to support her birthday wish of raising $50K for childhood cancer research. They received mail from every state, and people from all over held bake sales, yard sales, and car washes all to help this family get closer to their goal.
In the end they ended up raising $110K for The Truth 365 where every penny raised went towards helping to fund six different childhood cancer trials.
SEPTEMBER IS CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH…GO GOLD TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!!
On Thursday September 4th, from 6pm – 10pm please kick off childhood cancer awareness month by joining Andrea + Dan Gorsegner for a beautiful evening at McLoone’s restaurant in Long Branch where their goal is to raise funds and awareness for children battling. The funds raised will go to The Truth 365 (via Will You Send Us a Dollar campaign), where EVERY SINGLE penny will go directly to research with the hope of discovering less toxic means for treating our kids, followed by our ultimate dream for a cure!
Tickets are $100/person in advance and $120 at the door. Included with your investment are an OPEN BAR, hors d’oeuvres, food stations and dessert. Additionally you’ll be enjoying the beautiful ocean view, LIVE music from recently signed singer-songwriter Mikey Wax (featured on the hit show Pretty Little Liars, and named “Artist on the Verge”), raffles/prizes and a valet service will also be provided.

Drummers…What’s Your MO? By Tara-Jean Vitale(3)
Drummers…What’s Your MO?
Modus operandi (plural modi operandi) is a Latin phrase, which can be translated as “method of operation”. The term is used to describe someone’s habits. We Americans like to shorten it to “MO”, and Thino Cacciolo, owner and founder of MO DRUMSTICKS LLC., has chosen to build his own unique business around it. When first meeting Thino it is apparent his passion for music was the foundation for the creation of the Mo Drumstick. Thino believes “each and every drummer should be given the ability to create the perfect drumstick based on their own unique style of play, grip, age, physical abilities and experience”…a drummer’s MO. According to Thino, the music industry has taken tremendous strides in the development of better instruments both electronically and structurally, but stick design still had a ways to go. That is until MO DRUMSTICKS TM. was introduced just about 6 months ago.
Drummers across the country have re-discovered their ‘DRUMMIN’ MOJO” and are not shy about letting everyone know how special these sticks are. Here are just a few…
Tom Motts has appeared in Modern Drummer, Metal Edge and Billboard magazines. Tom and Serial Obsession has performed on many legendary stages like CBGB, ,B.B.Kings, Lamours,Terminal 5 and Kenny’s Castawys to name a few.
Tom writes… “I was fortunate enough to be among the first drummers to road test this innovative stick, which I found added much control to my playing.
By adding a numbered weight system that allows you to customize the balance of the stick which changes the “sweet spot, fulcrum) it allowed me great comfort especially for my old fashioned stick twirls, thus creating the “MOTTS ROCKS #147”. Drummers, we no longer have to settle… Thino and MO DRUMSTICKS just made it personal!!! Having my Signature Stick makes me feel like a King and I’m loving mine!
Staff Sergeant Robert Hooks of The United States Army is stationed in Afghanistan. Every soldier carries a dream with him from back home to the forefront; Sgt Hooks dream was to play the drums. He found MO Drumsticks on Facebook. He sent a message through the internet asking about ordering custom drumsticks for when he comes back home. Thino thought “why wait?’ He made Sgt Hook’s personal and unique drumsticks as quickly as possible and shipped them out to where the soldier was stationed in Afghanistan. MO Drumsticks can be found all over the United States, from California to Texas to NJ to Ohio. But the package he shipped to Afghanistan for one of America’s soldiers was one of Thino’s favorite.
Thino with John Castellano and Good & Plenty posing in front of Brown’s in Bay Ridge in the late 70’s. Good & Plenty played many local hot spots in NJ: Robins Reef Yacht Club and Venice Restaurant in Bayonne. Left to right… Thino Cacciolo, John Castellano, Doreen Rose, Ray Naccari, Phil Castellan0
MO’s Patent Pending one of a kind, Grooved/Weighted Drumsticks combine machined ergonomic groove(s) filed into the stick at the fulcrum, (the sweet spot of the stick) with a weight distribution system that allows a drummer to customize the mass weight of each stick to match their play. Not just add weight to the stick, but distribute that weight across the stick! Thino believes that this custom design will give drummers of all levels of play the opportunity to reach their full potential just by using their own personally designed custom MO DRUMSTICK.

A NOTE FROM CALVIN:
When I heard that Mike Marino was coming back, I cleared my calendar quickly and began letting integral parts of my world know that they need to laugh for obvious reasons; like all the ‘closed’ signs on government buildings. So perfect timing that Mike is back in his home state and joining him is The Paul Marino Band with Emily Grove. Coincidentally, I saw Paul Marino Band twice this summer in Belmar and wrote that “it was a little piece of heaven” to be listening to them perform with a Jersey shore setting sun just over shoulder. I love their sound.
I’ve got a 15 month history of being a huge fan of Mike Marino and the thought just occurred to me that back last May, I wrote an interesting article about Mike and my being a comedic snob and how extraordinarily funny and refreshing his humor is. So a bright bulb just went on in my left cerebral corner; why don’t I share that article again, right here on this stage. Oh and I’ve been lucky this past summer to catch Mike a few times including his hosting the 2nd Annual Asbury Park Comedy Festival.
Now my May article:
“Mike Marino is the consummate comedian; he just makes you laugh non-stop and with timely topics (I’ll explain shortly) I discovered ‘New Jersey’s Bad Boy of Comedy’ in 2012 at ‘Asbury Park Comedy Festival.’ And I said to myself “he’s one of the funniest comedians I’ve ever seen.” Point being, I’m simply a ‘comedic snob.’ Comedy is a gift and a special art form. Back in the sixties, I discovered Lenny Bruce, one of comedy’s greatest pioneers and innovators, albeit quite controversial because society was not ready for his bad words and bits. I’ve been a fan of Lenny’s ever since and ironically the Asbury Comedy Festival benefited the Lenny Bruce Foundation in 2012.
How perfect the synchronicity to catch Mike Marino that night for the first time. We had a chance to talk back stage afterwards; I marveled at his graciousness, affability and accessibility. A few weeks later, Mike called and invited me to a gig at an experimental comedy club in Hoboken; once again he just made me laugh and laugh. He’s a cool, smooth and endearing guy with some of the best material I’ve ever heard.
Now here’s where it all gets interesting. Some of Mike’s routines I’ve actually used in a comedic way (giving him all the credit) and sometimes I go introspective and realize Mike Marino is also a genius and clairvoyant, almost with the gift of the ‘shining.’ So what do I mean by this. Mike’s comedy is so relevant and futuristic, it can be used by current politicians to propel them into major office; yes a provocative thought and so therefore I challenge my readers to catch Mike’s act, put on your thinking caps and imagination gowns and drift into the land of Honah Lee or some Jersey shore jetty or on Main Street in Metuchen.
I hope this was challenging enough for you to catch Mike on the 19th. That’s how funny this Jersey bad boy of comedy is. And take my cerebral challenge to see how certain politicians in a new evolving world should laugh and listen to Mike Marino at the same time. Wow, powerful stuff. Mike is a fascinating comedic innovator.”
SO MUCH MORE THAN A SPECIAL FIRST ANNUAL 5K RACE ON OCTOBER 20TH: ‘THE BUTTERFLY CIRCLE OF FRIENDS.’ REGISTRATION FOR RACE STILL OPEN By Calvin Schwartz(0)
SO MUCH MORE THAN A SPECIAL FIRST ANNUAL 5K RACE ON OCTOBER 20TH: ‘THE BUTTERFLY CIRCLE OF FRIENDS. ’ REGISTRATION FOR RACE STILL OPEN By Calvin Schwartz
Life is mystery, synchronicity, purpose and journey. Two years ago in a random act of connectivity and social media networking, I was in a far away place and met a new friend, Eddie F. on line. In a matter of minutes, we bonded digitally (he lived in Arizona) and soon after, Eddie told me about an amazing New Jersey woman, a Gold-Star military mother who lost her son in Iraq when he was only 20 years old. Energies of the universe move quickly and decisively. I became friends with Ida Gonzalez and nearly two years ago at Christmas time, we met on Route 18 in a real Jersey diner and sealed a beautiful friendship.
I learned about her son Spc. Michael L. Gonzalez and all that she does to give back to so many in her son’s memory. Out of the memory of Michael, Ida started the ‘Butterfly Circle of Friends’ which is a non-profit organization to assist those in need both locally and worldwide. “Michael was in Iraq to make a difference in other’s lives and we want to continue his legacy.”
In my journalistic world, I was so moved by Ida, her husband Pedro and son Troy that I went to hooplaha.com (an upbeat national website) and helped produce an amazing short video about Ida and her son Michael. The video was acclaimed by many who’ve seen it; a very special poignant emotional few minutes about love, caring and devotion. Here is that link to the video:
Now I’m thrilled to cover and announce another special event in honor of Spc. Michael L. Gonzalez as part of the ‘Butterfly Circle of Friends’ continuing commitment to give back and make aware. All the information is contained below in the flyers. Hoping to see you at the ‘First Annual 5K Race/One Mile Walk/Kids Race on Sunday October 20th.’
